Why bother

Evaluation. The idea of it can make people queasy. It’s often jargon heavy, theoretical and (in both the actual and Gen Z meaning), long. However, when you peel back the layers of data, evaluation at its core embodies two very natural and very human skills: learning and storytelling.

Learning. On one hand, evaluation helps you iterate delivery and outcome processes based on best practice learning. On the other, it means that you talk about what you did, so that you can do it better next time - or the same, or differently, or never again.

Storytelling. What some call recording evidence of lived experiences - situating these in wider social, geo-political and cultural contexts to demonstrate impact and change - others call using their voice, or platforming someone else's to tell stories, share journeys and feelings.

What we do

We help you share great stories and document valuable learning from the work you're doing, and we can provide this support at all stages of a project's delivery.

This could mean FRY being there from the very beginning, helping you decide, refine and articulate what you are trying to achieve.

It could mean us popping by mid-way through, to help you develop some bespoke data collection techniques.

Or it could mean us arriving late to the party, helping you turn your information into a final document, presentation, film or diagram.

It could even mean us joining you when you think everything is wrapped up, to help you - and the wider sector, get the most out of your learning, through some work on process.

How we work

We will support you to demonstrate the value of the work you do, to understand the impact you’ve made, and to help both your learning and your storytelling. Using bespoke approaches to evidence the impact of your projects/programmes, and by equipping you to use evidence to learn and adapt, we believe in supporting you so you can do more and do it better.

We are proactive, accountable, approachable and transparent, and we value working in partnership with clients as opposed to doing evaluation to/on/for them. At the same time we ensure that the necessary, formal bits are in place: impartiality; research integrity and rigour; informed and appropriate consent. We blend existing and established research methods with innovative creative techniques and digital tools to enable access, keep costs low, extend our scope and capacity, and keep evaluative practice iterative.
